How To See The Good

Focussing on a negative aspect of something rather than the positive can cause upset in your life, not just for the people you’re dealing with, but also yourself. Being negative all the time is like eating a tiny bit of poison on a daily basis. The trouble is, for some, the brain’s natural way of thinking becomes addictive. You see the brain is actually hard-wired to think negatively, and so by letting it do that constantly makes it a very difficult habit to break. But with practise, patience, and a desire to be more positive, like all habits the negative train can be derailed. Seeing the good in situations and people can be a powerful way to foster a positive outlook on life and promote a sense of happiness and gratitude.

Here are some strategies to help you see the good:

  • Practice Gratitude: Cultivate a daily habit of expressing gratitude. Take a few moments each day to reflect on the things you are thankful for, whether they are big accomplishments or small joys. This practice can shift your focus towards the positive aspects of life.

  • Reframe Negative Thoughts: When faced with challenges or setbacks, try to reframe negative thoughts into more positive ones. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, focus on what you can learn from the experience and the potential for growth.

  • Look for Silver Linings: In difficult situations, try to find the silver linings or positive aspects that might not be immediately apparent. Sometimes, setbacks can lead to new opportunities or valuable lessons.

  • Surround Yourself with Positive People: Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive individuals can influence your perspective and outlook on life. Positive people can inspire you to see the good and find solutions even in challenging situations.

  • Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness involves staying present and fully experiencing each moment without judgment. It can help you appreciate the small joys and simple pleasures in everyday life.

  • Focus on Strengths: Instead of fixating on weaknesses or shortcomings, focus on your strengths and the strengths of others. Emphasising positive attributes can improve self-esteem and foster a positive environment.

  • Engage in Acts of Kindness: Engaging in acts of kindness and helping others can create a sense of fulfilment and joy. When you see the positive impact you have on someone else's life, it can boost your own positivity.

  • Limit Negative Media Consumption: Be mindful of the media you consume, as constant exposure to negative news and information can influence your outlook. Balance the information you receive with positive and uplifting content.

  • Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend. Acknowledge your efforts and progress, even if things don't always go as planned.

  • Find Beauty in Simplicity: Appreciate the beauty in simple things, such as nature, art, or the laughter of loved ones. Slowing down and noticing these moments can bring joy and a sense of wonder.

Seeing the good is a skill that can be developed over time with practice and mindfulness. It's not about ignoring the challenges or difficulties in life but rather adopting a balanced perspective that acknowledges both the positive and negative aspects while choosing to focus on the good. Make a conscious effort to be positive on a regular basis, in all areas of your life. Try not to give it a perfunctory treatment, rather make it a regular, new way of life.
